The Calypso Waterfall on Mount Kissavos

Hidden on the verdant slopes of eastern Kissavos (Mount Kissavos), the Calypso Waterfall is one of Thessaly’s most impressive natural treasures.

The Calypso Waterfall on Mount Kissavos

It is located above the seaside village of Kokkino Nero and near the "balcony of Kissavos," Karitsa. The easiest and fastest way to reach it is from Karitsa. At the southern exit of the village, do not follow the signs that lead left to Kokkino Nero, but continue on a fairly passable dirt road. You can proceed carefully even with a conventional car, but a 4x4 vehicle is preferable.

After a few kilometers, you will encounter signs marking the path that leads to the waterfall, which is about 1.5 km away. After about 20 minutes of walking through a magical landscape with plane trees, chestnut trees, and beeches, you will reach the waterfall. The path is quite easy, but a little caution is needed in the last, downhill and slippery, meters!

A breathtaking landscape

The Calypso Gorge resembles a scene from a tropical forest. Dense vegetation, flowing waters that form pools, and cascading waterfalls create a magical environment. The main waterfall, with a height exceeding 70 meters (one of the highest in Greece), ends in a deep blue lake, offering a spectacle of unparalleled beauty. Many dare to dive into the icy (especially in spring) waters.

The best time to visit the waterfall is from spring, when it has the highest water flow, until autumn. The experience can become even more exciting, as the Calypso Gorge is the most popular in Thessaly for canyoning. You can also combine a visit to the waterfall with hiking on the extensive network of trails on Kissavos, with thermal baths at the springs of Kokkino Nero, or with a swim at one of the beaches of the Aegean. The combination of the wildness of the mountain with the relaxing moments by the sea is irresistible! Just as irresistible was the charm of the nymph Calypso in the eyes of Odysseus!
