Weekend in Kanalia Kanalia is one of the most beautiful semi-mountainous villages in Karditsa, and it is famous for its tavernas around its plane tree-shaded square.
It's built 14 km from the city of Karditsa, at an altitude of 340 meters on the slopes of the Agrafa mountains and belongs to the Municipality of Mouzaki. It's a favorite weekend getaway for locals from Karditsa and Mouzaki. In the village, besides the unlimited views of the plain, you'll find beautiful stone mansions and atmospheric cobblestone streets. One of its most impressive sights is the church of the Dormition of the Virgin (1894).According to local tradition, supported by a manuscript of Theodoros G. Paschos from 1949 (based on an older manuscript by Goulas Evang. Paschou from 1785), it was a *vakoufi* of the women's monastery of Lykousada in Loxada. In the area, there were clay pipes (canals) through which water was transported to Loxada. According to another version, they transported milk from the monastery's goats and sheep. The first residents seem to have settled here in the mid-17th century AD, fleeing from the Turks and originating from Epirus. They were followed by residents of the plain who were trying to escape from malaria, and later others arrived, persecuted by the Ottomans, from Pentalofos ("Zoupani") in Western Macedonia, from areas of Arta and Evrytania, and even from Crete! Until World War II, the village experienced continuous growth, exceeding 2000 inhabitants in 1940. However, the urbanization of the post-war years led to a gradual decrease in population, with the result that today (2021 census), Kanalia has only 259 permanent residents.
