Filia Gi Winery in Sofades, KarditsaAt the lush green foothills of the Agrafa mountains, beside the banks of the ancient river Kouralios (now known as Sofaditis), the village of Filia preserves a centuries-old bond with viticulture. There, in the area known as “Ampelia,” where every family once cultivated its own small vineyard, Filia Gi Estate was born — a winery that blends tradition with technology and hospitality with quality.
Filia Gi Estate began its operation in 2014, but its true origins date back to the early 2000s, when a young couple at the time, Christoforos Christoforou and Karolina Kontou, started by making wine on an amateur level from grapes they bought from local producers. Their love for wine, its flavors, and aromas grew stronger with every harvest, and in 2014, the winery was built amidst the vineyards they had been planting for years.Today, the torch has been passed to the sons of Christoforos and Karolina Kontou — Giannis, an oenologist, and Andreas Christoforou, an economist — who bring innovative ideas grounded in technology, always guided by taste and authenticity. The vineyard: Where wine is bornCovering an area of 130 stremmas (13 hectares), the vineyard of Filia Gi stretches along the foothills of the Agrafa mountains at an altitude of 187 meters. It benefits from ideal microclimatic conditions: cool summer nights, clay-loam soil, stony subsoil from ancient river deposits, and beneficial winds from Agrafa. The grape varieties cultivated here combine the Greek winemaking tradition with international aromas and characters:Native varieties: Limniona, Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Black MuscatInternational varieties: Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, Vermentino, Malbec, Special emphasis is placed on Limniona, a Thessalian variety that is gradually reclaiming its rightful place on both Greek and international wine maps. Its intense and fruity aromas, soft tannins, high acidity, and excellent aging potential result in exceptional wines, both red and rosé.Image A winery with soul and identityThe modern and energy-autonomous building of the winery was designed with respect for the region’s history. The heron that adorns the structure pays tribute to the ancient pan-Thessalian sanctuary of Itonia Athena, which was located nearby on the banks of the Kouralios river.Today, the winery includes:an underground stone-built cellar for wine aging,a production area with state-of-the-art tanks,a tasting room and visitor reception area,as well as facilities accessible for people with disabilities.Wine tourism experience with all the aromasA visit to Filia Gi is a journey into the heart of the Thessalian vineyard.
