Discover the “Souda of May”

The region of Argithea, the Thessalian Agrafa Mountains in the Regional Unit of Karditsa, represents the very essence of Greece’s mountainous landscape. Breathtaking, wild, and unspoiled scenery, pristine nature, abundant running waters, and imposing peaks dominate all four points of the horizon.

One of the area's most iconic villages is Petrilo, whose eight settlements are spread across the slopes of Mount Voutsikaki at an altitude of 1,160 metres. In Livadia, the settlement that serves as the “gateway” to the Petrilo region, you will find a handmade, painted sign that points the way to the trail leading to Souda Waterfall.

The trail is ideal for all ages and for families with children. It is less than 700 metres long. Local residents make sure it remains clearly marked and well maintained. They have even installed a small wooden bridge where the path crosses a stream, while ropes have been placed along the final section, where the incline becomes somewhat steeper. A particularly charming touch is the artwork you will encounter along the route, created by Natalie, an artist from Malta who lives in Petrilo.

After a 15–20 minute walk, you will find yourself standing before the impressive waterfall. Souda (or “Souda tou Mai”, as the locals call it) cascades down three levels and has a total height of approximately 25 metres. It never runs dry, but its flow is especially spectacular during spring and the early summer months. A few metres below, small natural pools are formed, where visitors can take a swim—provided they can handle the icy-cold water.
