Municipal Market of KarditsaBuilt in the late 1920s, it stands as a unique example of modern architecture – crafted from concrete, metal, and glass – significant at the very least on a nationwide scale within Greece.
It is quite possibly one of the last surviving market buildings constructed by the renowned French company Hennebique, founded by François Coignet, pioneers in using reinforced concrete for public structures since the late 19th century. Its design features a square floor plan composed of four independent, L-shaped sections, which ingeniously support the intricate metal framework of the roof. This pioneering and admittedly costly project was championed by the visionary and cosmopolitan mayor of the time, Asterios Allamanis. Despite facing significant opposition, the consolidation of the city's butchers, fishmongers, and greengrocers under one roof was hailed as a major stride towards modernization. This move permanently cleared the central square and nearby streets of the previously ubiquitous, permanently fixed market stalls.Recognizing its architectural significance, in 1992, the Municipal Market was declared a Monument of European Architectural Heritage. A few years later, it underwent meticulous restoration, breathing new life into it as a hub for cultural events and gentle recreational activities.(Source of information: Municipality of Karditsa – www.dimoskarditsas.gov.gr/)Related TagsKARDITSA - The city of biking,PLASTIRAS LAKE - A Man-Made Wonder That Feels Eternal,
