Cooking lessons in Pelion

If cooking is a true way to understand a place, then Karaiskos Farm is the perfect starting point to explore Pelion. Nestled on a hillside just outside Portaria, where the hustle fades and the rhythm of nature grows stronger, this family-run farm has become a landmark for lovers of gastronomy and authentic experiences.

From Farm to Table

The farm's hallmark is its cooking classes, an experience that eschews staged tourist folklore and dives straight into the heart of things. Guests begin their day harvesting fresh herbs and vegetables from the garden, learning to recognize the aromas of the earth. They then move to the outdoor kitchen, nestled beneath chestnut and beech trees, and participate in the preparation of local recipes: savory pies, hearty ladera (vegetable stews), zucchini fritters, and traditional sweets, always using seasonal ingredients.

The process is simple yet revelatory. Here, pastry is rolled by hand, olive oil comes from the farm's olive groves, and each step is intertwined with a story. This isn't a cooking class with mere recipes – it's an immersion into a time-honored ritual.

A Farm in Rhythm

Karaiskos Farm is neither a theme park nor an agritourism concept; it's a real, working farm that simply opened its doors to the world. Animals, vegetable patches, aromatic plants, fruit trees, buzzing bees – all are in operation, creating a natural environment where nothing feels artificial.

Those who choose to stay in the "Farmhouse," the farm's stone dwelling, can experience the day unfolding as it used to: with sunshine, work in the garden, cooking, and shared meals. The luckiest may even find themselves at one of the small celebrations that are organized, complete with music, wood-fired cooking, and good company.

Food with a Face

The farm's small restaurant serves dishes crafted with produce grown right on the premises. The menu is concise and seasonal, without exaggeration or pretentious creativity—only pure flavor, knowledge, and care. Guests can savor their food outdoors, with views of the slopes of Pelion and the aromas from the wood-fired oven completing the experience.

In the end, many leave with more than just memories. The farm's small shop offers jams, sun-dried tomatoes, pickles, and herbs. Simple products that carry a little story with them, and that, when you open the jar at home, transport you back once more.

A Stop Worth Making

Karaiskos Farm, with Eleni as its driving force, is the first farm in Thessaly to receive the official agritourism certification. It's located just 1.5 kilometers from Portaria and 20 minutes from Volos, easily accessible yet entirely removed from the "noise." It is open daily from May to October, and during the winter by appointment. Cooking classes are held by reservation, either for couples or small groups, and are aimed at both Greek and international visitors.
