Zerelia Lakes, the "Eyes of God"

Mystery continues to surround the creation of the "twin" perfectly round lakes, which locals call the "Eyes of God," a few kilometers from the town of Almyros. Are they the result of volcanic activity, were they "born" from the fall of meteorites, or are they simply dolines, the result of soil subsidence?

Zerelia Lakes, the "Eyes of God"

In the heart of Western Magnesia, very close to Evxeinoupoli in the Municipality of Almyros, are the mysterious twin lakes Zerelia (or Zirelia) — a rare geological phenomenon that attracts nature lovers, scientists, and travelers.

According to the prevailing version, they were created about 10,000 years ago by the fall of two meteorites, which left behind two perfectly circular craters at a distance of 250 meters from each other. The smaller lake has a diameter of 150 meters, a depth of 6 meters and covers an area of 25 acres, while the larger reaches 250 meters in diameter, 8 meters in depth and 42 acres in area.

Scientific indications

The presence of chert fragments, abundant quartz, and especially the existence of partially molten zirconium in the area — a metal that requires extremely high temperatures to melt — reinforce the theory of meteorite impact, as such temperatures are not observed in volcanic processes. The Zerelia lakes are the only ones in Greece that have been formed by such a phenomenon, known internationally as Maar lakes. Throughout Europe, there are fewer than 40 such lakes, out of the 178 that have been recorded worldwide.

Natural and cultural landmark

Locals call the lakes "Eyes of God", attributing an almost metaphysical meaning to them. On the hill (magoula) next to the lakes, surface excavations have brought to light traces of a prehistoric settlement, proving that the area has been inhabited since ancient times.

Next to the smaller, eastern lake, the Municipality of Almyros has created an Environmental Information Center (tel. +302422350232), where visitors can learn more about the geological and ecological significance of the lakes. In the same area there is a café-refreshment area, offering moments of relaxation overlooking the calm waters. During the summer, parties, concerts, and cultural events are organized on the shores of the lake, making the area a vibrant cultural meeting point.
