Koukounaries beach in Skiathos

Koukounaries — a jewel of Skiathos and Thessaly — is hailed as one of the most breathtaking beaches in all of Greece, its golden sands and pine-fringed shores earning it a place among the finest in the world.

Koukounaries beach in Skiathos

Koukounaries is located in the southwestern part of Skiathos, next to the settlement of the same name, formerly known as Strofylia. Along with Lalaria, it is one of the two most popular beaches on the island and is renowned for its exceptionally fine, golden sand. Each year, it is awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for cleanliness and environmental quality.

This is a fully organized beach with easy access—either by private vehicle or local transportation—and is also connected to the town of Skiathos by tourist boats that run daily excursions.

Beyond its crystal-clear waters, Koukounaries offers a wide range of water sports, including water skiing, jet skiing, and windsurfing. At one end of the beach, you’ll find the Skiathos Diving Center, while the bay is a favorite stopover for sailors navigating the Sporades, who often anchor offshore to enjoy its unique charm.

One of the beach’s defining features is the stunning pine forest that borders it. Well-marked paths invite visitors to wander under the shade of the trees. Hidden behind this forest lies Lake Strofylia, a 350-acre lagoon of great ecological value. Designated a Wildlife Refuge and part of the Natura 2000 network, the lagoon is a haven for birdwatching and nature lovers.

Beside the lagoon, the settlement of Koukounaries offers a wide range of accommodation options—from hotels and guesthouses to a well-equipped campsite—as well as a vibrant selection of tavernas, restaurants, bars, ouzeri, and cafés.

As the day winds down and the tourist boats depart along with most of the crowds, those who remain are treated to a tranquil atmosphere and a breathtaking sunset. While the view from Koukounaries is beautiful, the sunsets from the nearby beaches of Banana and Small Banana are considered even more spectacular.
