Evangelistria Monastery in Skiathos

A Sacred Landmark

The Holy Coenobitic Monastery of the Annunciation of the Virgin—known locally as Vangelistra—is the largest and only active monastery on Skiathos. It is located in the Agallianoi area, in the northeastern part of the island, just below its highest peak, Karaflytzanaka, at an altitude of approximately 200 meters. About 5 kilometers from the town of Skiathos, the monastery can be reached via a right-hand turnoff along the road to the Castle.

A Collective Vision with Mount Athos Roots

Unlike other monasteries on the island, which were established through individual initiative, the Evangelistria Monastery was the result of a coordinated effort based on a specific plan to accommodate a large monastic community. It was founded by monks from Mount Athos, who brought with them the strict monastic rules of the Athonite tradition. As a result, the monastery was initially closed to women.

Construction began in 1794 and was completed in 1806. With the exception of the west wing—which was destroyed by fire in 1872—the buildings visitors see today are original and architecturally significant, featuring stylistic elements commonly found in mainland Greek churches.

A Cradle of the Revolution

The monastery played a pivotal role in the revolutionary movements of its time, offering both moral and material support to the pre-revolutionary struggles and the War of Independence in 1821. In fact, it was here, in 1807, that the first Greek flag—with a white cross on a light blue background—was designed, woven, blessed, and raised.

Today, the monastery houses a library and a Folklore Museum, both containing sacred heirlooms, important historical artifacts, and priceless relics. Many of these were donated by Admiral Lazaros Kountouriotis in 1823, in recognition of the monastery’s vital contribution to the cause of Greek independence.

Living Tradition and Monastic Life

In a specially arranged hall, visitors can purchase handmade products prepared by the monks, often with the support of local volunteers. Proceeds from these sales help sustain the monastery’s operations.

The monastery is particularly vibrant during religious services, drawing large numbers of worshippers—especially during Holy Week and the night of the Resurrection. Another major pilgrimage occurs on August 15, the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, when a moving procession takes place on the eve of the celebration, in an atmosphere of deep reverence and devotion.

• Getting There: The monastery is located approximately 5 km from the town of Skiathos. Follow the road toward the Castle and take the clearly marked right-hand turn that leads to Evangelistria. The road is paved and suitable for all vehicles. Parking is available on-site.
• Opening Hours: The monastery is generally open to visitors daily from morning until late afternoon. Hours may vary during holidays or special religious events, so it’s advisable to call ahead or check locally.
