Alonissos Town: The Aegean from Above

The Chora served as the island's capital until the devastating earthquake of 1965, which caused widespread damage and prompted many residents to relocate to Patitiri, now the main port and administrative centre of Alonissos. 

Despite its temporary abandonment, the Chora never ceased to be a significant landmark in the island's history. During the 1980s, many former inhabitants returned and, alongside new residents, began lovingly restoring the traditional houses, carefully preserving the settlement's authentic character.

Architecture and Urban Charm

The village is characterised by narrow, stone-paved alleyways (kalderimia) winding between stone houses topped with tiled roofs and adorned with wooden balconies. Homes are built amphitheatrically, gracefully following the natural slope of the hill, many boasting hidden internal courtyards and small, fragrant gardens. The Chora's architecture reflects traditional island aesthetics, yet carries distinct echoes of Venetian and Macedonian influences.

A defining feature of its layout is the Castle, whose walls once encircled the settlement, shielding inhabitants from pirate raids during the Middle Ages. Although only sections of the walls remain today, the Castle's presence underscores the Chora's strategic importance in times gone by.

A Modern Tourist Haven

Today, Alonissos Town is a beloved tourist destination, drawing visitors eager to discover the island's authentic soul. The village offers a delightful variety of tavernas, inviting cafes, and charming little shops showcasing local products and handmade crafts. Throughout the summer, the Chora comes alive with cultural events and festivals, culminating in the vibrant Feast of the Assumption on August 15th, where visitors can savour traditional delicacies and join in lively local dances.

Access to the Chora is via a paved road from Patitiri, a scenic journey of about 3 kilometres. For hiking enthusiasts, well-marked trails connect the Chora with other parts of the island, offering unforgettable walks through olive groves and pine forests.
