Alonissos MuseumThe impressive stone building that dominates the western side of the port in Patitiri houses the Alonissos Museum "Kostas and Angela Mavrikis" (also known as the "Pirate Museum"), the largest private museum in island Greece. Across its four floors, visitors can explore various aspects of the island’s turbulent history.
The Alonissos Museum “Kostas and Angela Mavrikis” is much more than a simple exhibition space: it is an experiential station that helps us understand Alonissos not only as a place of natural beauty, but also as a bearer of a rich historical and cultural identity. The museum was founded in 2001 by Mr. Kostas Mavrikis (who, along with his fisherman father, discovered the Peristera Shipwreck in 1982) and his wife Angela. With personal initiative and passion, they collected and preserved objects, evidence, and memories that form a fascinating palimpsest of the past of Alonissos and the wider Aegean. The museum’s halls present archaeological, historical, folkloric, and technological exhibits, while it also “hosts” works of art donated by Greek and foreign artists who love Alonissos. Thematic sectionsOn the floor where the entrance and ticket office are located, the exhibits include impressive finds from the underwater wealth of the area, mainly ancient amphorae, as well as objects that narrate the island’s long-standing maritime tradition. On this floor, you will also find the museum shop, where one can purchase local products, handicrafts, and books related to or inspired by local history.Image In the basement, a rich folklore collection is hosted, transporting visitors to the daily life of past generations of the island. Traditional costumes, farming, carpentry, and beekeeping tools, old household appliances and utensils, as well as a small olive press, offer a valuable glimpse into life on the island during the decades before the arrival of tourism. The authenticity of the items and their careful presentation make the museum a space of experiential connection with folk culture.Image The pirate pastOn the first floor lies the visitors' favorite room. It is dedicated to the island’s pirate history. Old maps, weapons, small cannons, chests, nautical instruments, sailors’ personal belongings, and references to the activities of pirates in the Aegean (16th–18th century) make up a section full of mystery and adventure. The sensation is like being immersed in a book of maritime legends, with heroes and antiheroes who lived and acted in the troubled waters of the Aegean. The adjacent room is dedicated to the national liberation struggles from 1821 to World War II. On the same floor, there is also a conference and presentation space that also hosts many of the works donated by the museum’s friends.Practical InformationLocation: Patitiri, AlonissosT/ +302424066250Email: admin@alonissosmuseum.comWebsite: www.alonissosmuseum.comOpening days and hours: May – September, daily 10:00 – 18:00Tickets: Children up to 8 years old – Free Ages 8–18 – €3 Adults – €5 Ages 65 and over – €4Related TagsALONISSOS - The "Alternative",SKIATHOS, SKOPELOS, ALONNISOS - Island Hopping in the Emerald Aegean,
