Agios Ioannis at Kastri – Skopelos

For many years, it was a hidden secret, known only to locals and a few well-informed visitors. The film “Mamma Mia!” turned this small corner of the island into the undisputed “movie star” of Skopelos.

Agios Ioannis at Kastri is one of the most iconic landmarks of Skopelos. The small chapel, built atop an imposing rock approximately 100 meters high above the sea, offers one of the most enchanting and photogenic sights on the island, leaving no visitor untouched.

Reaching Agios Ioannis requires a bit of effort – 105 steps carved into the rock lead to the top – but the reward is priceless: an indescribable view of the Aegean, a deep sense of serenity, and a spot ideal for sunset watching. The chapel became world-famous thanks to the film “Mamma Mia!”, as the wedding scene was filmed here. That very scene transformed the whole of Skopelos into one of the top wedding destinations in the world.

The beaches

Near the parking area, you’ll find a canteen and two small but beautiful beaches. The first is relatively easy to access, while the second requires some climbing or swimming. Both are “exposed” to the moods of the northern wind. The area around Kastri is also ideal for exploration. Small coves, crystal-clear waters, and Skopelos’s unique natural landscape offer an experience that blends spiritual tranquility, natural beauty, and cinematic charm.

How to get there

Agios Ioannis is located on the northern side of Skopelos, near Glossa, the island’s second-largest and one of its most picturesque villages. From the town of Skopelos, it can be reached by car or scooter via a paved road that passes through lush greenery. Shortly before Glossa, you'll see a sign on the right pointing to Agios Ioannis at Kastri. During the summer months, day trips are also organized by tourist agencies. Weather permitting, it’s also possible to approach by sailing boat.
