Pineios Delta

Somewhere here, on the shores of the Aegean, the Pineios River – described by Homer as 'argyrodinis' (silver-swirling) – completes its epic journey after flowing for 216 kilometers. Waters originating from countless tributaries on the slopes of the Pindus range, Mount Koziakas, Mount Titaros, and Mount Olympus traverse and nourish the vast Thessalian plain before passing through the breathtaking narrows of the Tempi Valley, just moments before reaching their final destination.

In this final "stage" of its course, through an area inhabited since Paleolithic times, the Pineios forms a majestic Delta, officially recognised as a "Landscape of Outstanding Natural Beauty." The river mouth stretches approximately 10 kilometers, from Stomio in the South to Kouloura in the North. Very close to the main estuary, nestled along the riverbanks, you'll find charming wooden huts belonging to local fishermen, some of whom offer delightful boat trips. Additionally, companies like Trekking Hellas East Thessaly guide explorations of the Delta via canoe-kayak, often followed by a fun archery session. The Delta is also a beloved spot for "Bird Watching," and you'll frequently see enthusiasts on the banks or in boats, equipped with binoculars or cameras sporting powerful zoom lenses, eager to capture glimpses of the diverse birdlife.
