In Pythio (old name “Selos”), one of the oldest and most beautiful villages of the Municipality of Elassona, stands the historic Church of Panagia, also known as the Holy Monastery of Panagia Theotokos of Pythio, one of the most important post-Byzantine monuments in Thessaly. The church is located to the southeast of the settlement, in the area of the present-day cemetery, and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

The history of the monument dates back to the Byzantine period, as its earliest phase is placed in the 11th or 12th century. According to the founding inscription, a major reconstruction took place in 1638, when the church was transformed into a three-aisled basilica. The monastery flourished until the late 18th century, when it was most likely destroyed.

From the original monastic complex, the northern wing with the cells survives, along with the famous “crypt”, a semi-underground vaulted space that was used to hide people and valuable belongings in times of danger. In the surrounding area, foundations of auxiliary buildings and parts of an ancient cemetery have also been uncovered.

Architectural features

Over the centuries, the church underwent continuous interventions, repairs, and additions, gradually acquiring its present form. It is built of stone and follows the architectural type of a three-aisled basilica with a narthex and an exonarthex. The interior is divided by short and sturdy columns, while the pitched roof and asymmetrical additions from different periods reflect its long historical evolution. A distinctive feature is the impressive circular two-storey bell tower, the only one of its kind in Thessaly, as monastic architecture of the period predominantly used square bell towers.

Of particular importance is the rich fresco decoration of the church. The earliest wall paintings date back to the 16th century, while most of the interior was frescoed in 1638. Later, in the 18th century, the western exterior façade of the church was also painted. The iconographic program includes scenes from the Old and New Testament, depictions of saints, and martyrdom scenes. Equally significant is the old carved wooden iconostasis, which combines elements from the 16th and 17th centuries.
