Canyoning in Kissavos and Mavrovouni

A beloved pursuit for adventurers and nature lovers alike, Canyoning (formally known as “Technical Gorge Crossing”) finds its ideal, rugged terrain on the slopes of Mount Kissavos and Mavrovouni. Ready to dive in? The only prerequisites are a head for heights and a passion for water!

Canyoning in Kissavos and Mavrovouni

Kissavos and Mavrovouni are renowned for their countless springs, which over millennia have carved numerous breathtaking gorges adorned with waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, and natural rock basins (vathres). Canyoning in this region ranks among the most thrilling experiences in Greece, catering to both novices and seasoned adventurers alike, as there are gorge sections with varying difficulty levels suitable for both recreational exploration and more demanding athletic canyoning.

On Kissavos

The most celebrated of all is the exceptionally beautiful Kalypso Gorge on Kissavos, located near the villages of Kokkino Nero and Karitsa. Witnessing Kissavos' largest waterfall, conquering its descent, and plunging into the cool waters of its pool are truly unforgettable experiences. Specialised alternative activity companies offer the descent of Kalypso in two versions: one tailored for beginners and another for those already 'initiated' into the sport.

For those seeking their first taste of canyoning adventure, the Kryoneri Gorge, situated between the villages of Ambelakia and Spilia on northern Kissavos, is the perfect introduction.

On Mavrovouni

Rakopotamos Gorge offers a stunning route, descending 320 meters through the verdant slopes of Mavrovouni, presenting an ever-changing tapestry of dense vegetation and inviting natural pools. The descent involves 6 rappels ranging from 8 to 37 meters, numerous exhilarating jumps into pools, and culminates spectacularly at the namesake Rakopotamos beach – widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Thessaly.
