Rakopotamos, the hidden paradise

Between the lush green slopes of Mavrovouni and the azure waters of the Aegean, Rakopotamos is considered by many to be the most beautiful beach of Larissa.

Rakopotamos, the hidden paradise

In the "shadow" of Mavrovouni, the mountain that "bridges" Pelion and Kissavos, we find Rakopotamos, one of the most impressive beaches of the Regional Unit of Larissa. The "triple", sandy beach takes its name from the homonymous river that flows into its northernmost section. The southern and smaller section was formerly "dedicated" to nudists. Rakopotamos, also due to the fact that it is not visible from the road, remained until some years ago a well-hidden secret, known only to the inhabitants of the neighboring settlements, Sklithro and Polydendri, and to some "knowledgeable" residents of Agia and Larissa. Today it is very popular, but far from touristic "excesses".

Although the beach remains "unorganized" –without sunbeds and beach bars– visitors can find two cafes and a taverna that serve basic needs and complement the experience with local flavors and a friendly atmosphere.

Besides the sea, the area also offers a unique adventure experience: the gorge of Rakopotamos, which starts from the slopes of Mavrovouni and ends at the beach, is one of the most popular spots for canyoning in Thessaly. The route through the gorge, with its small waterfalls, natural pools and dense vegetation, is ideal for those who love nature activities and seek alternative forms of tourism.
