Tyrnavos Cooperative Winery & Distillery

Tyrnavos Cooperative Winery & Distillery is one of the most important cooperatives in Greece in the fields of winemaking and distillation. Based in Tyrnavos, a region with a long-standing tradition in viticulture, the cooperative has successfully combined traditional knowledge with modern technology, offering high-quality products.

Tyrnavos Cooperative Winery & Distillery

Tyrnavos Cooperative Winery & Distillery is one of the oldest and most active cooperatives in Greece, with a history dating back to 1961. Since then, the cooperative has evolved into a modern pillar of winemaking and broader economic activity in the region.

The Cooperative currently counts around 500 members, who are vine growers from the wider Tyrnavos area. They cultivate around 9,000 stremmas, approximately 40% of the total Tyrnavos vineyard. Annual production ranges between 10,000–13,000 tons of grapes, which are used to produce wines, tsipouro, and other spirits.

Varieties and Production

Among the cultivated varieties are Greek ones such as Roditis, Batiki, Limniona, Debina, as well as international ones like Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ugni Blanc, Maccabeu, Chardonnay, and Grenache Blanc. Special emphasis is placed on the Moschato of Tyrnavos, a variety closely tied to the region’s identity and forming the basis of many of the cooperative’s products

The cooperative also continues the local tradition of distillation, with tsipouro of Tyrnavos holding a prominent place. Whether with or without anise, the cooperative’s tsipouro is the result of many years of experience and ongoing refinement, and is an excellent choice for those wishing to discover the authentic taste of the Thessalian spirit. The cooperative also produces ouzo, a product that was "baptized" in the area in the 19th century.

Each year, the cooperative distributes throughout Greece and abroad 6,000 tons of wine and over 400 tons of tsipouro and ouzo, divided among 60 different labels. Many of these products have received numerous distinctions in international competitions.

The Winery

The cooperative’s winery is located just outside the town of Tyrnavos and is open to visitors throughout the year. Guests have the opportunity to tour the production facilities, learn about the winemaking and distillation processes, and taste the cooperative’s select products. This experience offers a unique opportunity to explore the region’s rich wine tradition and enjoy the warm hospitality of the people of Tyrnavos.
