Kissavos Mountain Refuge

The Kissavos Mountain Refuge offers protection from the elements, warmth, and rest to explorers of the beautiful Thessalian mountain and has a long history behind it.

Kissavos Mountain Refuge

It is located in the "Kanalos" position at an altitude of 1604 meters, on the northern slopes of Kissavos, and is the "pride" of the very active Hellenic Mountaineering Club (E.O.S.) of Larissa. The spiritual "ancestors" of today's club members are the ones who laid the foundation stone in the distant 1939. The location was chosen after a proposal by the then president Kostas Siopis, and the first money was raised by organizing a dance and a photo exhibition. As mentioned in sources of EOS Larissa: "It is built with stones and soil and woven from a dream against the cold, the night, the fear, against loneliness, and this imaginary unites the people who build it, as well as those who use it, those who guard it, as well as those who seek it and those who discover it."

Unfortunately, World War II and the Civil War followed, leading to the abandonment and partial destruction of the refuge. After repairs and additions, it was returned to the use of mountaineers in 1950. In 1977, the road connecting it to the village of Spilia was built, while in the following years and in various phases (1980, 1982, 1998, 2000), significant renovation and expansion works are carried out. The next step is the repositioning - reactivation of the educational sliding lift, in the position where it existed 40 years ago.

Today, the refuge can accommodate 60 people for sleeping and 500 for food per day, while the total number of its visitors within a year exceeds 2,500. Responsible for the smooth operation, the comfortable and safe stay of visitors is the very kind and always smiling, Mr. Giannis Zachos, an authentic lover of the mountain and "soul" of the refuge, who has to remember countless, wonderful evenings at 1600 meters. And because love, even for the mountain, passes through the stomach, he revealed to us that there is also the possibility of "delivery" from some of the taverns of Spilia, famous to the meat-eaters of Larissa!
