Sailing in Northern Sporades

Imagine a cluster of beautiful islands—the Northern Sporades. With ideal winds, emerald waters, short distances perfect for island hopping, and safe anchorages, it's every sailor's dream!

Sailing in Northern Sporades

The Northern Sporades are a magical complex consisting of three inhabited and verdant islands and some dozens of uninhabited islets. A common denominator of all is the crystal clear waters, the wonderful beaches and the many, safe anchorages. The distances between them do not exceed 15-20 nautical miles. In the straits that intervene you may feel for a while the "power" of the Aegean, but you will quickly find yourself on leeward coasts. A week is usually enough to explore them, but those who know, claim that for a truly relaxing experience the ideal period is two weeks.

Each of the three inhabited islands has its own character. Skiathos is the most cosmopolitan, the most popular and the one with the most intense nightlife. Its bustling port is full of life - and supplies - but it can prove difficult to find a place to moor. Many boats stay at anchor and approach with their dinghy. Before you get there, however, we suggest a stop at the famous Koukounaries beach and the islet of Tsougria on the south and leeward side of Skiathos, where you will find several places to drop anchor. Very impressive is also the beach of Lalaria on the north side of the island, which, however, is accessible only with good weather.

MAMMA MIA!

Skopelos is the largest island of the Sporades, and probably the "greenest" island in Greece. Less "touristy" and more "authentic" than Skiathos gained worldwide fame in 2008 when the blockbuster musical "Mamma Mia!" was shown in cinemas. The most iconic scene of the film, the wedding of Meryl Streep with Pierce Brosnan, was filmed in a chapel on an impressive rock, in Ai Giannis in Kastri, on the northwest side of the island. You will need a little luck with the weather to be able to get there with your boat, but you can always visit it by road from the two ports of the island. One is located in Chora, the capital and the other in Loutraki, the port of the very picturesque village of Glossa.

Beyond the two ports, in Skopelos, you will find many small coves for safe overnight stays at sea, such as Blo and Panormos. There are many options for refreshing dives in pristine beaches where the pines reach almost to the wave. The Stafylos, Velanio, Milia, Kastani and Hovolo stand out.

IN THE ALONISSOS MARINE PARK

Alonissos is the "alternative" of the Sporades, a true ecological paradise. Less touristy than its two "sisters", it is ideal for those seeking some peace on their vacation. In Palio Chorio, you will see images of "old Greece". In Patitiri, in the port of the island, you will moor to renew supplies, but you will find safe anchorages in other parts of the island, such as in Votsi or the bay of Peristera, a small island opposite Alonissos.

East of Alonissos you can reach the islet of Kyra Panagia, but remember that you have now entered Zone A' of the National Marine Park, a unique wildlife sanctuary. You will need to purchase tickets and be aware that there are some restrictions aimed at protecting the vulnerable ecosystem. The very likely encounter with some endangered species such as the Mediterranean Seal (Monachus Monachus) will give another dimension to your trip, while a visit to the Care and Information Center in Steni Vala, could act as an awakening of ecological consciousness, especially if you have young children in your company.
