Alonissos: Exploring the Largest Marine Park in the MediterraneanIn the heart of the Aegean, where the sea is not just a landscape but a living, ever-changing ecosystem, the Alonissos Northern Sporades Marine Park stands as a natural sanctuary. The largest protected marine area in the Mediterranean is not only a refuge for rare species but also an invitation to reconsider our relationship with the marine environment in a more conscious, more compassionate way.
One of the Most Important Ecological Refuges in the MediterraneanEstablished in 1992, the Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades is Greece’s first marine protected area. Covering approximately 2,260 sq. km, it encompasses Alonissos and six other uninhabited islands—Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Psathoura, Youra, Piperi, and Skantzoura—as well as numerous smaller islets. The Park is divided into protection zones, with Zone A being the most strictly regulated in terms of access. This unique marine environment hosts Europe’s largest population of Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus), along with dozens of fish species, coral formations, sea turtles, cetaceans, and rare seabirds. Beneath the surface lie valuable archaeological remains, including the underwater museum at the ancient shipwreck of Peristera. A Seaborne Exploration ExperienceExploring the park by boat offers a truly unforgettable experience. Visitors can discover dramatic coves, sea caves, secluded beaches, and vibrant underwater habitats where nature reigns undisturbed. Daily organized excursions depart from Patitiri in Alonissos, while private boat or RIB charters—with or without crew—are also available. Important note: Access to Zone A is only allowed with a special permit and ticket, as these areas are of critical ecological importance and serve as breeding grounds for the monk seal Monachus monachus. How to Get a PermitIndividuals wishing to visit high-protection areas (such as Piperi or Youra) must obtain a ticket via the park’s official online platform. Ticket prices vary depending on the type of vessel and length of stay, with proceeds supporting the park’s conservation and management. For more information, visitors may contact the Park Management Unit at +30 24240 66419 or email mdpp.sporades@necca.gov.gr.A Delicate Balance Between People and NatureVisiting the Marine Park requires sensitivity and respect. Anchoring is allowed only in designated areas, approaching caves where seals or birds nest is strictly forbidden, and all fishing or disturbance of marine life is prohibited. The Park is not a tourist attraction—it is a living organism. A rare place that invites us to connect with the primal and the authentic. And to become, even briefly, guardians of its fragile balance.Related TagsALONISSOS - The "Alternative",SKIATHOS, SKOPELOS, ALONNISOS - Island Hopping in the Emerald Aegean,
