Keramidi & Kamari, the northernmost PelionKeramidi is a beautiful village that impresses with its dense residential layout and the contrast between red-tiled roofs and the classic Pelion-style slate stone rooftops.
Many believe that Pelion ends somewhere around Zagora and Pouri. But there is more! On its “back” side, hidden within dense forests lie remarkable monasteries (Flamouriou, Sourvias), and at its northernmost edge, where it meets Mavrovouni, just before Magnesia hands over the baton to Larissa, there is a beautiful semi-mountainous village, Keramidi. To reach Keramidi – which administratively belongs to the Municipality of Rigas Feraios – you must approach from the side of Lake Karla passing through Kanalia. The village remains well hidden until almost the last turn, when it is finally revealed with its three distinct neighborhoods on different levels, perched on the ridge that descends toward the Aegean. Impressive stone mansions, atmospheric narrow cobbled alleys, and a wonderful square combine with views of the sea. A lovely stone bridge that crosses over the alley leading to the lower neighborhood takes you to the courtyard of Saint George. The church, a three-aisled basilica, dates back to 1787. The settlement was most likely founded during the Ottoman period by people fleeing persecution in the surrounding regions and by fugitive Epirotes. There is no evidence of earlier habitation, although Keramidi, along with Old Mitzela, is considered one of the possible locations of Ancient Kasthanaia.A short distance from the village, visitors will find two beaches, Agios Ioannis and Kamari, the latter proudly showcasing its “solitary” rock in the sea, which has become its trademark.Related TagsWESTERN MAGNESIA - Between Titans and Centaurs,PELION - A Four Season Dream,
