Kouri Forest in Almyros

The Kouri Forest is not only a beloved recreational area for the residents of Almyros and Efxeinoupoli, but also a natural treasure that has been included in the Natura 2000 network, with a clear potential to develop into an open-air environmental education workshop.

Kouri Forest in Almyros

Just a few minutes from the center of Almyros, about 2 km from the town, lies the impressive Kouri Forest. It is an extremely rare lowland oak forest with a total area of about 1,100 stremmas, the only one of its kind in the Balkans, which has been designated as a Biogenetic Reserve Area.

In the past, the forest was a continuation of the vegetation of Mount Othrys and its area reached 20,000 stremmas. It covered the area from Neochoraki to the beach of Almyros and from the streams of Platanos to Cholorema near Aidini. There are many reasons that contributed to the reduction of its size before it was placed under protection. The most significant were overgrazing, uncontrolled logging, and the creation of arable land due to its lowland location. As if that were not enough, at the beginning of the 21st century and for about a decade, Kouri was almost entirely left to its fate, although events and music festivals were occasionally organized within it.

The rebirth of the forest

In recent years, through an initiative of the Municipality of Almyros and with the participation of the Region of Thessaly, extensive redevelopment works have been underway, breathing new life into the once-neglected forest. At its "heart," an area of 140 stremmas functions as a park. It features a small artificial lake, a playground, outdoor chess, and a zoo with deer, roe deer, peacocks, swans, and ducks, while there is also a café-restaurant for moments of relaxation. A network of trails is ideal for walking, cycling, and enjoying nature.

The recent acquisition of electric tour vehicles by the Municipality of Almyros allows visitors—including families with small children, the elderly, and people with mobility difficulties—to comfortably and safely tour the forest without harming the environment.

Environmental education

At the same time, efforts have begun to transform the forest into a hub of environmental education. In collaboration with the University of Thessaly, plans are underway to create:
•          An Environmental Information Center
•          Study halls and laboratories for students
•          Guesthouses for long-term stays and research

In this way, Kouri aims to attract students and researchers from all over Greece and the Balkans, offering a unique field for studying biodiversity and the functions of a lowland oak forest.

Kouri Forest is not just a local attraction; it is a precious natural lung for the entire Western Magnesia, ideal for visiting all year round. The harmony of nature, its tranquility, and its rich flora and fauna promise an unforgettable experience for every visitor—from families and nature lovers to students, researchers, and travelers seeking authentic experiences in nature.
