Lafkos, Pelion

Lafkos, one of the most authentic and charming villages of Southern Pelion, enchants visitors with its stone-built mansions, cobbled pathways, and its shady village square. Above all, however, it captivates with the feeling that time here came to a standstill many decades ago.

Amphitheatrically built at an altitude of 300 metres overlooking the Pagasetic Gulf, Lafkos is believed to have been founded in the 15th century AD at a slightly lower location that offered protection from pirate ships. Situated approximately 50 km from Volos, it is a place where history, tradition, gastronomy and everyday life coexist in perfect harmony. Whether for a day trip or a relaxing holiday, Lafkos offers an experience filled with images, aromas and memories of authentic Pelion.

The heart of the village beats in its central square, one of the most beautiful in Pelion. With its towering plane trees, traditional cafés and distinctive Pelion architecture, the square serves as a meeting point for locals and visitors throughout the day. There, beneath the shade of the trees and against the backdrop of the village’s imposing church, visitors can enjoy the unhurried pace of life that defines Lafkos.

Points of Interest

Among the village’s most renowned landmarks is the historic Forlidas Café, considered the oldest café in Greece and in continuous operation since 1785. With its traditional interior, antique wooden furnishings, photographs from bygone eras and Greek coffee prepared over hot embers, it preserves the atmosphere of another age. Over the years, many prominent figures from the worlds of Greek literature and the arts have passed through its doors, and to this day it remains a vibrant part of the village’s social life.

Another important cultural attraction is the Fampeion Museum, housed in the village’s former primary school. Established in honour of painter Thanasis Fampas, the museum showcases paintings and sculptures that highlight his distinctive artistic journey. Another unique museum—one of only two of its kind in Greece—is the Antonis Tavanis Radio Museum, where visitors can admire 150 collectible radios manufactured between 1917 and 1960.

Another memorable experience in Lafkos is a visit to the village’s traditional wood-fired bakery. The aroma of freshly baked bread and handmade pies fills the narrow streets every day, creating a warm sense of authentic hospitality. The bakery has been operating for decades, faithfully preserving the tradition of wood-fired baking and local recipes, making it a landmark for both residents and visitors alike.

For those who love hiking and the sea, a short 3.9-kilometre trail leads from Lavkos to its former harbour settlement, Milina, on the shores of the Pagasetic Gulf. Along many sections of the route, the historic and beautifully preserved stone-paved kalderimi path can still be seen.
