The Mamtzios Tower in Tsaritsani

Like a Maniatic tower house that decided to move to Thessaly, the Mamtzios (or Mamtzouridis) Tower stands in the picturesque old neighborhoods of Tsaritsani.

The Mamtzios Tower in Tsaritsani

It is the only surviving one of the three towers ("konakia") that existed in the past in the beautiful town of the Municipality of Elassona.

It was built around 1770 (perhaps a little earlier) by renowned Zoupaniote stonemasons (from Zoupani-Pentalofos *Voiou* Kozani). The very small windows, the 71 loopholes-battlements, and the machicolations (used to pour hot oil on attackers) testify to the defensive character of the building. The 15-meter-high tower is three stories and has a semi-basement with a depth of 1.8 meters.

It is located opposite the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, while very close to it you will find another important building of Tsaritsani, the old stone school, which was built in 1910 and named "Oikonomios School" in honor of the great benefactor, Konstantinos Oikonomou.

Tsaritsani bears the title "Historical and Martyred Community" in memory of the 52 Tsaritsaniotes who were executed by the Italians in 1943 and by the Germans in 1944.
