Kayak & Yoga at Lake Stefanias

Deep in the heart of Argithea and the Agrafa Mountains, Lake Stefanias offers the ultimate retreat for relaxation and the perfect setting to reconnect with nature—and with yourself.

Kayak & Yoga at Lake Stefanias

Argithea is one of the most remote and inaccessible regions of Greece. It is not for everyone, nor for those seeking luxury. Instead, it is a destination that will be cherished by discerning travelers, conscious explorers, and lovers of authentic experiences and adventure.

The Agrafa region is among the least developed areas of Greece, but that is far from a disadvantage. Here, you will find yourself as far away as possible from the noise and stress of modern civilization. Nature remains untouched, unspoiled, and majestic, and hidden within one of its secluded corners lies a dazzling little emerald: Lake Stefaniada.

Greece’s Youngest Natural Lake

Lake Stefaniada, the youngest natural lake in Greece, is only 63 years old. It was formed in January 1963 when, after days of heavy rainfall, a massive landslide from the “Stoicheio” slope of Mount Sminiko blocked the ancient course of the Stefaniotis stream on its way to the Achelous River.

The lake lies at an altitude of approximately 700 metres and takes its name from the nearby village of Stefaniada, located about 2 kilometres away. Covering more than 110 stremmas (11 hectares), with a shoreline stretching 1.8 kilometres, the lake’s dimensions alone cannot capture the rare combination of dramatic natural beauty and the almost otherworldly tranquillity that defines the landscape.

An Ecotourism Paradise

The lake and its surrounding area offer a wide range of activities, all united by a common principle: absolute respect for nature. Visitors to the region owe much to a young woman from Xanthi, Vasiliki Koimtzidou, who first visited Argithea six years ago and, captivated by the beauty of the area, decided to establish her activities here.

Undoubtedly, the most popular activity is kayaking on the lake’s calm waters. The only way to get even closer to the lake is by taking a refreshing swim. Visitors can also combine their experience with horse riding, hiking, and archery. More recently, yoga has found its perfect place here as well, offering the ultimate relaxation experience in an idyllic setting, with the surrounding mountains reflected on the lake’s glass-like surface.

Lake Stefaniada is located 71 km from Karditsa and 45 km from Mouzaki.
