OLYMPUS - Thessaly’s Quiet Power The Thessalian side of Olympus reveals a different, gentler face of Greece's most iconic mountain. Amidst peaks, plains, and traditional settlements, visitors have the opportunity to experience the "mountain of the gods" in an authentic and meaningful way. A place with global symbolism, in a lesser-known dimensionOlympus is the highest mountain in Greece and one of the most important natural and cultural landmarks of the Mediterranean. It is inextricably linked to Greek mythology and the ancient world, and has been officially recognized as a National Park since 1938 – the first in the country. But beyond its special tourist and ecological value, Olympus also has geographical diversity. Its Thessalian side, less prominent, offers easier access, a gentle route to the peaks, tranquility and contact with an authentic landscape free from saturation. Image Few know that from this side of the "mountain of the gods", it is possible to climb to the "roof of Greece", to Mytikas, at 2918 meters, even if you are not a mountaineer, in just a few hours! Even fewer know that on this side of Olympus, there is even a ski center, perhaps the most "special" in the country, as it operates in military installations! It is located in the Vrysopoules position at the Mountain Ski Training Center (K.E.O.A.X.), has road access and its use is allowed to citizens, free of charge, upon presentation of their Police Identity Card. It also has a shelter with the possibility of accommodating 30 people, but for overnight stays a special permit from the Special Forces Directorate is required. Image Nature, culture and production in balanceThe area at the foot of Olympus is a characteristic example of balance between local life, the natural environment and productive activity. Elassona, a historic administrative and commercial center, serves as the main gateway to Thessalian Olympus and is the starting point for a multitude of activities, from tours of traditional settlements to ascents on mountain trails. The wider area is closely linked to the agricultural and livestock tradition. Local products, such as famous cheeses, high quality meats and wines, are a basic element of the identity of the place. The viticultural zone of Rapsani, on the eastern foothills of Lower Olympus, is one of the oldest and most recognized wine-producing areas in the country, with distinct characteristics and a long historical course. On the southern slopes of the mountain, you will find a series of picturesque mountain villages (Sykamia, Karyá, Kallipeyki) Image Cultural memories and activitiesAt the same time, settlements such as Livadi and Kokkinopilos, with strong elements of Vlachian tradition, preserve living cultural memories and offer access to a well-developed network of hiking and mountaineering routes. The natural relief of the area favors mild forms of activities in nature, such as hiking, cycling and observing the flora and fauna of Olympus. The Thessalian side of Olympus forms an authentic and accessible landscape, where the daily life of the inhabitants meets the history, nature and experience of the visitor in an effortless and experiential way.
