Lake Longas in Trikala

This small and relatively unknown lake in the Antichasia Mountains is one of Thessaly’s hidden secrets, offering visitors a haven of tranquility and rare beauty, far from the noise of everyday life.

Lake Longas in Trikala

This small lake, beautiful in every season of the year, is transformed in winter into a fairytale-like, dreamlike setting. Snow often makes its appearance, and there are many times when the lake’s surface freezes, giving the fortunate visitor the impression of being in much more northerly latitudes: the Alps? The Arctic Circle? And yet, it is located in the heart of Greece!

At the same time, it is one of the most beautiful places in Thessaly to enjoy vivid autumn colors, in the impressive beech and oak forests that surround it. In the beautifully landscaped area, visitors can enjoy picnics, leisurely walks, and mountain biking. Following the pleasant trails around the perimeter, it takes no more than two hours of easy walking to complete a full circuit of the lake.

In the near future, a study will be carried out for the redevelopment and utilization of the lake and the surrounding forest. The forest recreation study will record existing infrastructure and assess the need for new facilities such as hiking and cycling routes, a new playground, viewing and fishing spots, as well as improved accessibility for people with disabilities. The goal is to create a modern, safe, and functional recreational area that will also promote environmental awareness.

The lake took its name from the neighboring village of Longas and was created to supply water and irrigation to the surrounding settlements. The dam to which it owes its creation was constructed between 1998 and 2002.

*Lake Longas "belongs" to the Municipality of Meteora. It is located 47 km from Trikala, 39 km from Kalampaka, 15 km from Verdikousa, and 77 km from Larissa.
