The “French” Bridge of TrikalaIn the heart of Trikala, where the Lithaios River flows through the city, stands proudly the Central Bridge, also known as the “French” Bridge—a true gem of the city, with a rich history and a European flair.
Built between 1886 and 1888 by French engineers of the “Thessaly Railways” company, the bridge was constructed to unite the two banks of the Lithaios River, connecting the old and new parts of Trikala. Its design resembled bridges along the Seine. Its metal components were specially ordered from France and transported via Volos, evoking a time when the people of Trikala watched their city modernize under influences from the heart of Europe. The “French” bridge is not merely a crossing point – it is a living piece of history, a place full of memories.Listed historical monument Since 1996, it has been designated a listed historical monument; it was pedestrianized in 1997, and in 2015 it was renovated and equipped with architectural lighting, enhancing its visual presence and transforming its crossing into a unique walking experience in the heart of the city. In the evening hours, when the first lights embrace its iron curves, the bridge takes on an almost romantic atmosphere – perfect for photos, or simply to relax and gaze by the waters of the Lithaios.Starting point for explorationIt’s a classic meeting point and a starting place for city explorations. To the north lies the “old” town, with neighborhoods such as Manavika and Varousi, as well as the Fortress with the Clock Tower. To the south, right at the edge of the bridge, begins Asklipiou pedestrian street, the liveliest and most bustling street in Trikala.Just a few meters west of the “French” bridge stands a modern footbridge built in 1998. The Asklipiou Bridge and the statue of the god of Medicine serve as a reminder of the city’s ancient heritage. There, the sound of the artificial waterfall blends harmoniously with the urban landscape, reminding us that Trikala is a city that knows how to honor its past while looking to the future.Related TagsTRIKALA - Hi-Tech on the River of Forgetfulness,METEORA - Between Heaven and Earth,
