The Bridge of PsyrrasThis beautiful and well-preserved stone bridge served for decades as a key passage connecting Thessaly and Epirus with Macedonia and the Balkans.
Two-arched bridge – the second, smaller arch is a “relieving” one – spanning the Ionas River, a tributary of the Pineios. It is located in a lush green setting at an altitude of 480 meters, very close to the Kalabaka – Deskati road, about 300 meters after the junction for Psiloma. It lies 33 km from Kalabaka. The bridge is built from the local sandstone rock. Its master builder came from Kastoria and was the same person who constructed and painted the church of Saint Demetrios in the village of Psiloma. In earlier times, it served as the main connection between the areas of Kalambaka and Deskati in Grevena, and was one of the important passages for caravans traveling from the Balkans to Central and Southern Greece. It has been designated a preserved historical monument. Extensive restoration and enhancement works were carried out on the bridge during 2009–2010, under the responsibility of the Technical Services Directorate of the former Prefecture of Trikala, within the framework of the “Pindos” program.Technical CharacteristicsArch Span: 12.50 m (large) – 3.20 m (small)Arch Height:7.90 (6.80 + 1.10) m (large) – 5.00 (3.10 + 1.90) m (small)Deck Length: 31.00 mDeck Width:2.30 mRelated TagsKALAMBAKA - KASTRAKI - Secular guardians of the sacred rocks,METEORA - Between Heaven and Earth,
