Plane Spotting in Skiathos

What is plane spotting? It is the hobby of watching and photographing airplanes. Plane spotting enthusiasts visit airports, airbases or other places where they can see airplanes taking off or landing while many take notes on the registration number, the aircraft model and the airline, enriching their "collection".

Perhaps the most famous airport in the world for plane spotting is that of St. Maarten, a small island in the Caribbean (Dutch possession), which became known worldwide precisely for its airport which is located right next to a beach. In Europe, the closest thing to the airport of St. Maarten is that of Skiathos.

Every day, dozens of visitors to the island check the arrival - departure schedule of "Alexandros Papadiamantis" and wait at its edge to experience the experience of landing a plane right over their heads! When it comes time for takeoff, they "set up" behind the planes to feel the enormous thrust from the turbines. Of course, this, in cases of very large aircraft, which must exploit the entire length of the landing-takeoff runway, involves the risk of minor accidents, so be careful!

For the record, the airport was inaugurated in 1972, while the airport terminal building was inaugurated in 1991 and expanded in 2002. The total length of the runway is 1628 meters and is bordered on both sides by the sea.
