Mount Olympus: The Mountain of the Gods Becomes a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Greece's highest mountain, the legendary home of the Twelve Olympian Gods and one of Europe's most important biodiversity hotspots, has now been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, following the unanimous decision of the World Heritage Committee during its 48th Session in Busan, South Korea.

This recognition marks a historic milestone for Greece, as Mount Olympus has been inscribed as a mixed World Heritage site, acknowledging its Outstanding Universal Value for both its exceptional natural and cultural attributes. A Long Journey to Recognition

Mount Olympus was included on UNESCO's Tentative List in 2014, while its official nomination was submitted in 2023 following years of collaboration among the competent authorities to document its unique natural and cultural significance. As early as 1981, it had already been designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve, while its protection has been further strengthened in recent years through the modern management framework of the National Park.

Mount Olympus needs little introduction. Rising to 2,918 metres at its highest peak, Mytikas, it dominates the landscape between Thessaly and Macedonia and stands among Europe's premier mountain destinations.
