25 October 2025Chestnut Festival of Karitsa / October 25–26In the beautiful village of Karitsa, on the slopes of Mount Kissavos overlooking the Aegean, a two-day celebration is held in honor of one of the region’s most prized fruits — the chestnut. The chestnut is an integral part of Larissa’s agricultural production, with deep historical roots, especially in the Kissavos area. The local varieties stand out for their exceptional quality and flavor. The festivals organized to “honor” this remarkable product combine tradition, scientific knowledge, entertainment, and the promotion of local culture. It is not only an opportunity for locals to reconnect with their roots but also a chance for visitors to experience firsthand the unique beauty of this magnificent mountain. Furthermore, these events aim to strengthen the effort to establish the Karitsa chestnut as a Product of Designated Origin (PDO), which would have a positive impact on the region’s economy.Image Event ProgramSaturday, October 25, 20257:00 p.m. Blessing of the bread – Exhibition Opening – Greetings8:30 p.m. Traditional dance performancesAn exhibition dedicated to the chestnut will be hostedat the Karitsa Primary School.A festive celebration will follow with live folk music.Sunday, October 26, 2025Church service9:00 a.m. Hike through the Kalypso Gorge – meeting point:“Profil” café, at the exit from Karitsa toward Kokkino Nero11:00 a.m. Lecture: “Chestnut cultivation in the era of climate crisis” by Dr. Alexandros Papachatzis, Professor of Pomologyat the University of Thessaly – Head of the Department of Agriculture – Agrotechnology – Director of the Laboratory of Horticultural & Soil Resources, HORTLAB12:00 p.m. Children’s activities by the Creative Porta Workshop1:00 p.m. Tasting buffet.A folk–rebetiko music celebration will follow.During the two-day celebration, visitors will be offered free roasted chestnuts.
