Euripides' "Medea" / Larissa, Garden Theatre (July 14, 2026)

Medea, Euripides' iconic tragedy, returns this summer in a major production of exceptional artistic standards. A performance that confronts the very core of ancient tragedy, its timeless intensity, and its enduring contemporary irony.

Nikita Milivojević, the internationally acclaimed director with a profound connection to Greek classical literature, returns after his groundbreaking artistic experience "Persians – The Journey into the Realm of Souls", presented in 2023 as part of Elefsina – European Capital of Culture, to approach Medea with clarity and inner strength, illuminating the deeply human dimension of the myth. The production remains faithful to the classical structure of the text, allowing the undercurrents of powerful memory to permeate the action. The story unfolds through Medea's own recollections, like persistent images returning to the surface: love, escape, children, and betrayal.

In the title role, Karyofyllia Karabeti portrays a woman who loved completely and was driven to ultimate rupture. Alongside her, Lazaros Georgakopoulos and Aris Lebessopoulos vividly embody the conflict between love, power, and responsibility that runs through the play, while Reni Pittaki, as the Nurse, gives voice to the memory and conscience of the tragedy.

Twelve actors form a unified stage ensemble, their voices merging into a collective body that reflects the heroine's downfall. Two musicians perform live on stage, seamlessly integrated into the action, while the original score by Dimitris Kamarotos flows through the performance with intensity and haunting beauty, creating a soundscape that engages in dialogue with the ancient text.

Medea remains profoundly relevant. It speaks of betrayal, exile, dignity, and the breaking point at which a human being is crushed between love and the demands of society. Rather than portraying Medea as a "monster," this production presents her as a conscious human being pushed to the very limits of endurance.
